This book for beginner learners is the first in a te reo Maori language learning series for beginners through to advanced level. In this level one book, students learn vocabulary, grammar and thirty sentence patterns to give them a sound understanding of basic conversational Maori language.The book steps through modules that teach the grammar and sentence patterns and show these used in examples. Learning is reinforced through repetition of sentence patterns and written exercises using real-life situations and contemporary language that reflect everyday life.
Dr Rapata Wiri (Ngati Ruapani, Tuhoe, Te Arawa) is a Maori language expert. He has taught Maori language, culture, history and society in universities in New Zealand and Hawai'i for over twenty-five years. He has also worked as a historian and researcher for iwi on Treaty of Waitangi claims. In 2019, he established an online course for people to learn te reo Maori, www.reoora.com, and this now has over a thousand learners enrolled at certificate and diploma levels.
